Setting Your Intention for the Year Ahead.

The theme of the month for January is INTENTION, and if you missed the first post of the year, then you can catch up HERE.

What is an intention? In short, it’s a daily thoughtful act used to design a life you truly enjoy. It’s about being mindful, living in the moment, and focusing on the now.

I’ve found myself scrolling past all the New Year; New You posts this year at great speed which is strange for me as I normally gravitate towards them with gusto. Not setting any goals, shying away from the resolution craze, and embracing a more relaxed start to the New Year is a concept I’m beginning to appreciate.

However, there are many areas of my life that require a tweak or two. I let my health slide the second half of last year, and my gluten-free plan took the brunt of self-sabotage. I intend to get back on track with this. Did you spot that word – intend!

Setting intentions means we aren’t beating ourselves up if we fail, it simply means we are willing to give it go and see what happens.

Here are a few top tips when setting your intentions:

  • Keep them positive
  • Make sure they can grow and evolve as you do
  • Don’t think long term – just set an intention for now
  • Be patient with yourself

And here are a few intentions that are worth setting this year:

  • I intend to meditate every day
  • I intend to make someone smile every day
  • I intend to forgive others and myself
  • I intend to lead an authentic life
  • I intend to manifest happiness

Can you add to this list?

From a life/work balance perspective, I’ve also set the following intentions for myself this year.

“I intend to write with confidence in my abilities.”

“I intend to manifest the opportunities I need to succeed.”

What are your intentions this year?

  1. I intend to continue with with goals and projects I set myself last year.
I intend to take things one day at a time rather than overwhelming myself at the big picture
    Happy new year, Shelley!

  2. I really believe staying positive and being patient with ourselves is so important. We easily get caught up with what everyone is doing and what is expected of ourselves. We need to achieve our goals in our own time, and everyones time frame is different.
I intend to continue to grow my bog and connect with others
I intend to continue to support my family
I intend to live my life honestly
    Xx

    1. Totally agree, Lorelle. We often get rushed along with the ‘new year, new you’ posts and adverts that bombard us every day and forget that we are all unique with our own dreams, goals, and speeds! Love your intentions xx

  3. I love looking at the new year through the lens of intentions rather than resolutions. It gives me something to “lean into” rather than a focused set point. I intend to express gratitude and appreciation daily–out loud. It’s a small thing, but a big impact. The funny part is, I think the biggest positive benefit isn’t to those I’m grateful to, but rather to myself. Having a mindset of gratitude increases my sense of joy and wonder. It’s good for me to be grateful. Thank you for being an inspiration Shelley. (And I’m not just saying that because of my intention. 🙂 )

    1. Yes! Yes to all of this, Angela! My dear friend bought me a gorgeous bracelet for Christmas that has ‘I am enough’ engraved on it – every day I focus on those words and appreciate the gift and my friendships.

  4. I intend to load photos for the remaining 30 countries on my replacement photography website I launched just before Christmas.

I intend to replace my Image Earth Travel blog theme as WP has retired my theme and it’s no longer supported. I heavily customised my current theme with CSS – so a new theme will be challenging.

I intend to keep publishing one travel/photography blog each week.

I intend to do some online courses to keep my skills up. 🙂

  5. I intend to finish both my books well 1st draft by April for one and the end of the year for the other or Ritu will be doing some Butt kicking…lol…Happy New Year, Shelly 🙂

    1. Thanks, Rachael. I’ve burnt myself out over the years trying to cope with goals and challenges and my head space just isn’t up to it anymore. Setting intentions is much better for me – and clearly, lots of others too haha x

  6. I really liked how gentle and positive your post is.
I intend to focus on my health this year. I intend to go a bit easy on myself in case I fail. I intend to be more mindful and happy.

  7. Yes! I get bored of the usual “new year, new you” bollox. A “new you” is a tad insulting- like you’re not good enough, BUT I love the idea of intentions. We all need good intentions. I intend to do my pelvic floor exercises (true story) and to finally get round to start writing creatively. Thanks Shelley!

    1. Ooh, I like the pelvic floor one!! Might add that to my own intentions (it would certainly help me out when I need to sneeze!) x
