Door Number Twenty-One: Create a Happiness Jar

Creating a happiness jar is probably my favourite personal development technique of all time. It’s so simple to do but can have the most incredible impact on your life and mental health.

Find an old jar, or pot (decorate it if you want). Starting on January 1st jot down everything you do that makes you happy throughout the year. Yes, this is a year-long activity, but if you can stick with it then it’ll be worth it –I promise! I have a small notebook next to my jar where I write down what has made me happy that day or moment, and then I tear it off and stuff it inside the jar.

Over the years that I’ve been doing a happiness jar, I have filled mine with day trips, lunch dates with friends, comments from strangers, cinema ticket stubs, notes from my kids, and messages from my readers.

On New Year’s Eve tip out the contents of your happiness jar and read all the slips of paper and remind yourself of all the joy and happy moments you’ve had over the year. Leave the year behind on a positive note ready to start again.

    1. Absolutely! That’s why I leave it in my kitchen with a pad and pen next to it. If I see it all the time it becomes a habit. (Top tip: when I’ve forgotten a few days or weeks I’ll look in my diary and see what events were on as that usually jogs my memory) x
