Five Minutes With…
Welcome to Five Minutes With… a feature where I invite bloggers of all genres to tell us a little about themselves and their blogging journey.
Today’s award-winning blogger is Hayley who blogs at Just Another Blog From a Woman.
Q1: When and why did you start blogging? Which platform do you use?
It was around Christmas time 2015 and I was deciding what my favourite Christmas songs were. And I thought to myself “the whole world MUST know what my final decision is! It’s imperative!”, so I very quickly crafted a blog on WordPress and published it. My blog hasn’t actually changed much since then. Like lots of bloggers, I also had lots of thoughts in my head that I just wanted to write down. It wasn’t really that I thought people needed to hear me moan, but it’s more that I just enjoy doing it. Writing a blog that is, not moaning. Oh ok, I also love moaning too.
Q2: What topics/themes do you blog about? Do you ever deviate from that theme?
Culture and social commentary would be the succinct way to describe what I write about. In more detail, that means I bang on about my favourite music quite a lot and complain about what things annoys me. I have found through blogging, that a lot of the things that annoy me also annoy a lot of people too, which is comforting. I love discovering “my kind” in the blogging world. One thing that I have definitely learned from blogging, is that someone can be -on paper- quite different from you, but at the same time still so very much like you. I think I may deviating from the question, which nicely brings us round to the second part of your question. I deviate all the time. Deviation is my middle name (it’s not actually, it’s Ann), but I think the time I especially deviated is when I wrote a post about budget beauty. I don’t usually wrote posts like that and probably won’t again, but it’s a post that even I find useful to go back and look at.
Q3: Which of your blog posts is your favourite and why do you like this one so much?
Very tough question. I think for personal reasons I have to go with the one I wrote about my friend “Stephen”. It means a lot to me. As I mention in the post, he gave so much to me and helped shape who I am. It’s good to read it from time to time and be reminded of that. I miss him terribly and that post helps keep his memory fresh. https://justanotherblogfromawoman.blog/2017/02/06/dear-stephen/
I also like the one that I wrote about women’s procreation choices as the response I got was phenomenal. It’s my most viewed post yet and was “Discovered “on WordPress. I was terrified of publishing it and got my husband’s full approval before I did, but I’m so glad I posted it. It opened a huge discussion (mainly on my personal Facebook page where I had made that post public and people from all over commented) and it quickly made me conclude that whatever a woman does, it’s never good enough. https://justanotherblogfromawoman.blog/2016/05/03/why-womens-procreation-choices-are-none-of-your-business/
Q4: Do you have a top tip to share for any new bloggers that might be reading?
You’ve got to have fun with blogging. If it stops being fun, then either you stop blogging or you change your approach. The last thing you want blogging to be is a burden. Also, reply to any comments that are left on your blog. I do this religiously and if I miss anyone out, it’s an accident. If someone has taken the time to read your post and leave a message, the very least you can do is “like” it, but a reply is even better. I think it’s just a bit rude to regularly ignore your readers.
Q5: What’s your favourite social media platform?
On a personal level, Instagram. For blogging, I’m a StumbleUpon whore. It used to be Facebook, but then they turned against the little people and messed with their algorithms and I get very little from it now. Twitter is even worse. I get bugger all from it (though I love chatting to people on Twitter, so use it for that). I’m getting into Flipboard too. I can surprisingly get a lot of traffic from it some days. I get very little from Pinterest too, but I do think that’s because I don’t invest the time in it. One day, I’ll get round to it. Once, I’ve found that blogging slave who will do all my social media work for me. Anyone, want to offer? I can pay you in sarcastic remarks and the dregs of my wine bottle? Anyone?
