Five Minutes With… @GloriaMcB #Blogging #HolisticHealth #Wellbeing #FiveMinutesWith

Welcome to Five Minutes With… a new feature where I invite bloggers of all genres to tell us a little about themselves and their blogging journey.

GloriaToday’s blogger is Gloria McBreen who blogs serious stuff at We Are Holistic and for fun and devilment at Tasheenga Writes Here.

Q1: When and why did you start blogging? Which platform do you use?

When I started writing articles about holistic health in December 2014, I weighed up the pros and cons of starting a blog. I liked the idea and thought that it would be nice to have my writing in a place where people can read it. Not everything I write is suitable for magazine publication. I began to connect with like-minded people on social media and I knew I made the right decision. I loved it from the very beginning! After much research, I signed up with wordpress.org and choose Bluehost for my domain. It’s a brilliant platform and very reliable but because I don’t earn money from my blogs, I felt it was an expensive hobby, (and December is a bad time for renewing) so just a couple of days ago I changed from wordpress.org to wordpress.com. A very simple process – I brought all my posts and followers with me. My fun blog is at wordpress.com and it’s perfect for what I need so it made my decision to change much easier.

Q2: What topics/themes do you blog about? Do you ever deviate from that theme?

I write about holistic health and promoting a positive attitude towards life. Yes, I had deviated a little bit when I wrote about having fun with my friends. I thought it was suitable for my type of blog because it’s important for our wellbeing to have lots of fun and laughs with our friends. But I realised that I enjoyed writing these posts more than the serious ones, and my friends loved when I wrote about them and they allowed me to exaggerate a little bit!

So that’s how tasheengawriteshere.wordpress.com was born. A place to write for fun and let my imagination take over. I call her my alter ego because sometimes I’m very sensible and other times I just want to have fun or be grumpy! (Tasheenga is never to be taken too seriously though.)

Q3: Which of your blog posts is your favourite and why do you like this one so much?

I think my favourite ‘serious’ post is a short poem I wrote about feelings of depression. https://weareholistic.wordpress.com/2016/10/10/might-call-depression/  I like it because many people can relate to it. It’s written from my heart and although I have never suffered from depression, I have been through times in my life when anxiety was an issue. My career as a holistic therapist taught me so much about mental health and how fragile it is. Many people suffer in silence and this little poem is an expression of fear and stigma. Keeping silent and hoping that tomorrow will be a better day – but nobody must know.

On Tasheenga’s blog, I love the post about the day I got a glimpse of who my new neighbours might be. This one here https://tasheengawriteshere.wordpress.com/2017/08/18/perfect-new-neighbour/ Now, the sensible part of me would have carried on working and ignored the comings and goings outside. But Tasheenga within me had other ideas and wanted to spy through the window. She has high expectations of who her perfect neighbour should be. She voices her thoughts!

You see, we all have these crazy thoughts going through our minds sometimes but we don’t always say what we’re thinking out loud because most of the time some of these thoughts are unrealistic and sometimes they’re just mad, so there’s usually a very good reason why we keep them to ourselves. This is why it’s fun and therapeutic to write fiction! And also why it’s a good idea to practice free writing and journaling.

Q4: Do you have a top tip to share with any new bloggers that might be reading?

Yes. Socialise with other bloggers via social media. This took me a while because I wasn’t doing it right. I was trying to do it only on Twitter. It was only when I joined the Big Up Your Blog community that I really started to connect with other bloggers and getting to know them. I even feel I’ve met them in person even though I haven’t. Learn from other bloggers too and never be afraid to ask them for advice. They’re all very encouraging and supportive but you have to be the same in return. It’s a two-way thing. By that I mean, reading their posts and commenting, sharing their posts on social media and sometimes just chitchat. Through this group, I discovered Flipboard and Stumbleupon – I’m still a bit dumb at both but I’ll get there. (Just now I realised I have only 3 SU followers and I’m following one person so…..I need to spend some time on that!)

I would also say this; blogging is time-consuming and just do what you can. Don’t try to compete with others because it might end up with you losing the passion for it. I used to feel incompetent and annoyed when I wouldn’t post for a few weeks but I realised that it’s not a competition for me – that’s not why I do it! I’m not a fast writer but I’m a happy one.

Q5: What’s your favourite social media platform?

My favourite is Twitter but I’m falling in love with Flipboard.
