My wonderful mum celebrated a ‘special’ birthday recently and as our family is well known for throwing a party to rejoice pretty much anything – even the opening of a new bridge! – it was only right that mum’s 70th received the full treatment.
Born and bred in Leeds, but now living in the West Midlands, my mum is a Yorkshire lass through to the bone, so it was always going to have to be a northern bash to enable family and friends to attend without the added cost of them travelling to Birmingham.
Using my Yorkshire contacts (thanks, Auntie Vicky!), we decided upon a surprise afternoon tea at the Malmaison Hotel in Leeds which I booked for 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon. I organised everything with help from the lovely Aimee in events and then sat back and waited for the date.
I was delighted to discover that our surprise party had been allocated a private space to the side of the main restaurant where we were able to put up banners and balloons. The staff were hilarious in their attempt to point me in the right direction as we arrived with mum (who was expecting to have a happy hour cocktail before going out to dinner – oh, the lies we told!). After a few wrong turns, we located the door and revealed the guests. Mum was totally shocked as she saw her sisters, cousin, aunt, niece, and best friends gathered. It couldn’t have gone any better – phew!
The food was amazing, and there was plenty of it. We were served with Mini Burgers, Smoked Salmon Wraps, Chicken & Avocado Wraps, Fruit Scones, Strawberry Pavlova, Salted Caramel Brownies, Trifle, Smoothies, and pots of tea. The staff were attentive and cheerful and made sure we were left alone to enjoy our afternoon.
We all filed out of the hotel at 7 pm with full stomachs and a smile. I’d highly recommend this venue and the afternoon tea menu. You can find out more HERE.
