10 Ways to Live Your Best Life #SelfCare

10 ways to live your best lifeLast week I turned 45 years old and celebrated with a slap up breakfast, a trip to the cinema, and an early night! Oh, how times have changed. It doesn’t bother me that my life is no longer a whirling mess of hangovers, nor do I feel like I’m missing out if I prefer to snuggle on the sofa watching Walking Dead reruns. We all need to choose a lifestyle that suits our desires and try not to fit in with the expectations of others, or indeed, compare ourselves with the lifestyles of our friends and colleagues.

As I excitedly unwrapped a Baby Groot bobble head, I chuckled as I realised my kids know me so well and embrace the fact that their mum will always be young at heart.

Embracing my inner child, evolving my skills and filling my life with laughter are all important goals as I look towards the next 45 years, and I believe I owe it to myself, and my children, to live the best possible life I can.

As I pondered on this intention, I thought it would be interesting to share a few ways we can all live our best life.

Here’s what I came up with…

  1. Love yourself. Friends and lovers will come and go, but you are the one constant in your life. If we can’t love ourselves then how can we expect others to love us? Working on discovering our positive body image, boosting our self-esteem, and defining our unique style is the ideal place to begin.
  2. Challenge yourself. This blog began life as a challenge I set myself one New Year’s Eve. It went on to change my life in unexpected ways. We all have fears that prevent us from doing what we want, but if we challenge ourselves, if we stand up and give that presentation, write that book, or jump out of that plane, we can grow in so many wonderful ways.
  3. Do what you love. For me, that’s writing, reading, and travelling. It might be something entirely different for you. What do you love to do? Think about your passions and your dreams. Do you work 9-5 in a job that has no meaning for you? If so, then how can you make changes so that you are putting all your energy into something that brings you absolute happiness and joy?
  4. Let go of the past. Sometimes this isn’t so easy, however, if we can break out of the cycle of disappointments, anger, and sadness then we free ourselves to welcome in more enjoyment. I know first-hand how holding on to the past (emotions) can manifest into a physical ailment.
  5. Declutter. My regular readers will know how obsessed I am with decluttering and the benefits a good clear out has for your life. Clearing the cupboard under my stairs has an immediate impact on my mood, sorting out the kitchen cupboards helps me stay on track with healthy eating, and organising my workspace helps my creativity. (You can read my post about decluttering your workspace HERE).
  6. Learn something new. If I could, I would be an eternal student. I love college life, and I try to join a community course as often as time and funds allow. We are incredibly lucky to have such a variety of topics available to us, whether that’s a face-to-face class or an online course. As a writer, I love to read how-to books to help me develop my writing skills, but you might prefer an art class, language course, or learning a new skill for career purposes. Whatever it is, embrace this new found knowledge.
  7. Find a coach. I’m not necessarily talking about a personal trainer who will monitor you running laps around the park, however, if that’s your thing then I respect your dedication. When I talk about a coach, I mean a life coach, or a business coach, or someone you trust who can help you set and achieve your goals. Most of us begin a project with oodles of inspiration but that can wear off over time, and we are left to self-motivate. As this can be a thankless task, I suggest you assign yourself a coach to help you get the best out of your ideas, goals, and life.
  8. Take a break. Living our best lives doesn’t require us to be on the move all day, every day. It’s admirable to put in 100% all the time but how long before you burn out? Taking a time out to refresh, chill out, and do nothing is time well spent.
  9. Relinquish control. Ooh, this is a tough one. Nobody likes that feeling of being out of control and yet how often do we get wound up, upset, or stressed out by situations that we have absolutely no control over. As a mother of three teenagers, I’ve had to learn to let go of the mum reins and let my kids be more independent. It’s hard; I’m not going to lie to you! However, relinquishing control has allowed them to grow as individuals and given me the space to explore new things.
  10. Have fun. It’s the simplest of things, and yet so many of us forget to add a sprinkling of fun into our lives. We work, eat, and sleep, and then we repeat it all over again. So why not visit that theme park, go to that concert, or hold a fancy dress party for Halloween. Remember to enjoy life. Sing like you’re a pop star, dance like you’re on Strictly Come Dancing, and laugh like you’re on speed dial to Peter Kay!

I’m sure you will have many ways to ensure you live your best life so please feel free to share them in the comments.
